Children with Challenging Behaviour
These are behaviours which are persistent and difficult for the child and the parent to manage. There could be many reasons for these behaviours:
- Withdrawn behaviour
- Violent and or unsafe behaviour
- Disruptive behaviour
- Inappropriate social behaviours
The behaviours may present as
- hurting others
- self-injury
- destructive behaviours
- eating inedible objects or other behaviours.
There are many causes for challenging behaviour in children, in many cases it is related to children who have additional needs. It is important to note that the above descriptions are just guidelines of reported behaviours – no two children are the same.
Some additional needs include:
- Autism (org.uk)
- Sensory processing (org )
- ADHD/ADD (kidshealth.org)
- Global Development Delay (org.uk)
- Oppositional Defiance Disorder (childmind.org)
How can solution-focused therapy help?
Solution-focused hypnotherapy looks to support the child and aims to improve children’s internalising and externalising behaviours by working in ways they are comfortable with -this is done by highlighting their strengths and focusing on the positives.
A parent’s anxiety about their child’s behavioural issue can often mean that change for the child is that much harder. It is because of this, that parents have reported to personally benefitting from the sessions themselves.
How long are the sessions?
We would start with an initial consultation, to gather information that could include:
- A diagnosis
- other agencies involved
- child’s hobbies/interests,
- Favourite colour
- Favourite subject etc.
2 initial consultations may be required, 1 simplified version for the child and another more complex for the parent.
How many sessions would we need?
This would be based on the individual needs of each child and the progress made during the sessions.
