Phobias
What is a phobia?
A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder which can leave people feeling overwhelmed, panicked and in more serious cases even debilitated. A person with a phobia either tries to avoid the thing that causes the fear, or suffers through it with great anxiety and distress.
Like anxiety, phobias can be simple or complex, they are more pronounced than fears and usually develop when someone has an inflated or unrealistic sense of danger about a specific object, place or situation.
Simple phobias can include
- Animals – such as dogs, spiders and rodents (although it can be any animal)
- Environmental- such as germs or deep water
- Situations – such as flying or visiting the dentist
- Body – such as blood or vomit
- Sex - such as the physical act of sexual intercourse, or the emotional and physiological aspect
Complex phobias tend to be more disabling than simple phobias and are often deep rooted, they include:
- Agoraphobia – which is the fear of being in a situation where escape could be difficult and
- Social phobia – which is a long-term and overwhelming fear of social situations and can include everyday situations and activities.
In extreme cases, the phobia may dictate a person’s life choices including the following:
- Employment
- Job location
- Driving route
- Recreational and social activities
- Home environment
What are the physical symptoms of a phobia?
There are several physical symptoms that people with phobias will experience, some of the most frequently reported are:
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Increased heart rate
- Trembling or shaking
- Upset stomach
- Vertigo
